RNC Announces New Latino Vote Effort

"We are going to engage Hispanics and Latinos like we've never done before" ~RNC Chairman Reince Priebus

The Republican National Committee is sending Latino outreach directors to swing states with large Hispanic populations as part of a larger effort to win more of the vote, officials announced on Monday. "We are going to engage Hispanics and Latinos like we've never done before," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said on a call with reporters.

The state directors will be in place by the end of the month in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Virginia and New Mexico, the RNC announced. Priebus declined to comment on how much money would be devoted to the effort.

The main pitch: Latinos have been hit hard by the economic recession, and Republicans say President Barack Obama is to blame for not aiding them more.

Hispanics: 20% Higher Unemployment

By Raoul Lowery Contreras

Before everyone believes that Hispanic Americans are going to run off a political cliff in November by throwing 70% of their votes to President Obama, we need to look at their Spanish cousins before they bury their community with four more years of Obama.

The 70% figure comes from a New York based survey by Latino Insights that concluded that 70% of Hispanics indicated they would vote for Obama and only 14% for Republican Mitt Romney.
Spanish Socialists ran Spain from 2004 to last November using Obama-like economic policies of spend, spend and spend more; debt on debt and deficits on deficits. More free stuff to the citizenry. The result from Time Magazine:
Whatever numbers you look at, Spain is in a death spiral, a self-defeating circle of recession and austerity that is sending one of Europe’s most important members into an economic dark ages.
Hispanic Americans have suffered deeply since Obama became President in employment compared to the heady days of President George W. Bush’s 6% Hispanic unemployment.
Here are Spain’s current numbers, Time:
Here’s just a brief summary of the ugly statistics:
  1. The government in Madrid expects the economy to shrink by 1.7% in 2012 – its third contraction in four years.
  2. Unemployment continues to rise. It is now more than 23%, and youth unemployment is above a staggering 50%.
  3. Housing prices are down 22% from their peak, and are likely to continue to drop, perhaps by 20% or more.”
Here are March figures for the U.S.–
  • Hispanic unemployment, March-2012, 10.3% – March-2006(Bush) 6%
  • Teenagers –March, 2012 – 25%…March 2011, 24.5%
  • 20-24 years old 13.2%
  • Veterans of Iraq/Afghanistan, March-2012, February-2012, 7.6%
  • No high school diploma 12.6%

Why Chavez went back to Cuba

The WSJ has an article on @Nelson Bocaranda, Columnist Tweaks Venezuela’s Leader, who’s shedding some light on Chavez’s condition:
Last week, Mr. Bocaranda said Mr. Chávez had decided to go for treatment to Brazil, where he has a standing invitation from President Dilma Rousseff, herself a cancer survivor. But Mr. Bocaranda says Mr. Chávez changed his mind at the last minute.
“He couldn’t face Fidel Castro” if he had gone to Brazil, Mr. Bocaranda says, because that would embarrass the Cuban leader after Mr. Chávez heaped praise on Cuba’s doctors, thousands of whom man Venezuela’s medical system. “He’s thrown in the towel,” he says. “The family is sure this will kill him.”

Not surprisingly, the talk is now about Venezuela After Chávez,

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio proposes a Republican DREAM Act

A few weeks ago, Daniela Pelaez visited Washington. A valedictorian at North Miami Senior High, the 18-year-old had just learned she no longer faced deportation, thanks in part to congressional intervention in her immigration case.

She visited the nation’s capital the same week a Fox News Latino poll found Hispanic voters favor President Barack Obama six-to-one over any of the Republican presidential hopefuls. Suddenly, there was new life in the DREAM Act, an immigration bill that offers a path toward citizenship for young people like Daniela who came to the U.S. illegally with their parents.

2012 Urban Conservative Conference

Urban cities in America are often at the top of the poverty lists and have systematically low performing schools. For the past half-century, inner cities have spiraled downward resulting in generations of low-income Americans becoming trapped in a cycle of poverty, fostered by liberal ideals of "social welfare" and "government dependence." On Saturday April 21, 2011 in Washington D.C., join a multiracial coalition of urban conservaitive organizations and activists who will combine policy & social initiatives to reverse this liberal destruction, and lead our urban communities to a brighter future.

Choosing the Future is a coalition of grassroots conservative organizations and activists who gather to discuss solutions for our nation's growing urban communities. Our goal is to become an annual summit for urban conservative organizations & activists. We invite any conservative group interested in supporting the urban conservative movement to join as a sponsor and attend our conference.

GOP Tries to Woo Hispanics - WSJ

WSJ's Laura Meckler examines struggles facing Mitt Romney's campaign in gathering support among the U.S. Hispanic population. AP Photo/Charles Dharapak
Congressional Republicans and Mitt Romney's presidential campaign are working to fashion proposals that could make up ground with Hispanic voters, concerned rhetoric on immigration from many in the party is turning away the increasingly powerful constituency.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) is developing a scaled-back version of the Dream Act, which would allow people brought to the U.S. as children to gain legal status, but not citizenship, if they enroll in college or the military. Several Senate Republicans have signed on to bipartisan legislation aimed at broadening access to the legal immigrant visa system.

The Romney campaign is looking for new proposals that would show he backs legal immigration, trying to pivot from a primary campaign in which he has taken a tough line on assistance to those here illegally.

Republicans & The "New" DREAM Act - The Hill

Senate Republicans want to alter DREAM Act legislation to steal away Hispanic voters from Democrats.

Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), the only Senate Republican of Hispanic heritage and a possible vice presidential pick, is working on an alternative version of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the country at a young age and serve in the military or attend college.

He declined to provide any details, but confirmed he hopes to have legislation soon.
